Posted by: cheryl searcy (csearcy@usgs.gov), Tue Dec 9, 2025 19:35 (1935 UTC)-- AVO Meeting notes for December 8, 2025 Great Sitkin: Orange Shishaldin: Yellow SIC: Matt Haney CS: David Fee Duty Scientist: Chris Waythomas Duty Remote Sensor: Chris Waythomas Duty Seismologist: Matt Haney CNMI duty seismologist: Matt Haney CNMI Remote Sensor: Chris Waythomas Primary alarms: Matt Haney Secondary alarms: Chris Waythomas AVO radio: Cheryl Cameron DUTY SCIENTIST REPORT– Michelle Coombs + GREAT SITKIN (Orange/Watch): • The eruption continues at a low rate. We added this line to the weekly on Friday: “Overall, the rate of lava effusion appears to be declining gradually.” • No new reports from Reston since November 26. • Visual observations mostly obscured by clouds throughout the week. A single clear image yesterday (December 7) showed that the south side of the dome is snow-free, rest is snowy. • Satellite views cloudy first half of week, then barely elevated surface temperatures observed December 5-7. • Seismicity remains low. A look at the long-term trend shows that located events are down from the 2025 peak, which was itself the lowest of the ~5 pulses of seismicity that have occurred during the 4-year eruption. + SHISHALDIN (Yellow/Advisory): • Unrest continues similar to the past week(s). Elevated LP and infrasound activity reported by Scott throughout the week • Cloudy first half of week, then vigorous steaming observed in web camera and satellite December 5-7. • No evidence of elevated temperatures in satellite data, except possibly on December 7. • The gas group reported a single low confidence detection of SO2 on December 3. • AAWU issued a SIGMET early yesterday morning (December 7) to say that resuspended ash was NOT seen in satellite. Not sure why they issued this, and we took no action. There was evidence of some local ash resuspension on the volcano’s flanks over the weekend due to strong northerly winds. + ILIAMNA (Green/Normal): • Scott reported two mass movement signals in seismic and possible infrasound data on December 5. Reston reports new deposits on the NW side of the summit totaling ~3.5 km in length that likely correlate with these signals, as reported this morning in Mattermost. + CNMI/AHYI: • No plume observed in the one clear Sentinel-2 image on December 5. • No Wake Island detections last week. + OTHER ACTIVITY OF NOTE: • M7.0 2025 Hubbard Glacier Earthquake near the Yakutat Peninsula occurred on Saturday, December 6, and was seen across our network, along with numerous aftershocks. M 7.0 - 2025 Hubbard Glacier Earthquake NET OPS/FIELDWORK: Max Enders + Raised Color Code Networks: • Great Sitkin – All stations working. • Shishaldin – All stations working. + Network, Multi-Station and Array outages: • Adak –Power will likely continue to be intermittent as TDX continues work on maintenance on the generators throughout the winter. Last week outage report: o 12/02 outage: Power out: 2025-12-02 10:30:07 UTC Power restored: 2025-12-03 03:00:07 UTC • Katmai Network – Antenna icing at repeaters late last week resulted in data gaps at several stations. • Peulik Network –Antenna icing causing intermittent seismic data gaps late last week. • Pavlof Network – Deer Island to Dolgoi radio link hung 2025-12-04 02:00 UTC this resulted in an outage for South Pavlof stations. Data flow restored with remote fix 2025-12-04 18:40 UTC. + Single Station Issues: • Iliamna – ILLG out due to telemetry issue, likely a broken radio antenna. • Shishaldin – SSBA/AV38 and ISNN/AV38 low power, GNSS powered off at both stations to conserve power for seismic data. • Westdahl – WECS seismic offline to conserve power for GNSS and radios. • Akutan -LVA out due to low voltage. • Makusin -Gappy data from MGOD and MAPS probably due to icing on MREP radio G1 antenna. • Okmok – OKAK and OKWE no telemetry. • Bogoslof – BOGO completely out last week, it was on back on briefly on 11/12 and 11/13. • Korovin – All stations online, but KOSE and KONE with real time seismic gaps. • Adak – Infrasound element 6 is not working and element 2 reported as having reversed polarity. See notes above regarding power outages, these outages may cause intermittent infrasound data gaps. • Little Sitkin -Gappy data and outages from LSNW and LSSA probably due to icing on LSSA radio antennas. + Overall: • Amchitka and Ft Glen Receive Facilities - VSATs switched to Winter Duty Cycled Mode (powered on for 1hr M-W-F) on 12/3 to conserve power. The primary Starlink WAN connection at both locations are left in continuous 24/7 powered mode and there is no disruption to real time data. + Tech Team Fieldwork: • Landslides work scheduled for last week got canceled. • An All – AVO field season debrief meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 9:00 am through 2:00 pm. OPEN ANNOUNCEMENTS + ADGGS – Scott Crass • Ian Brewster will be out of the office this Thursday. • Scott will be out of the office Wednesday through Friday. He will be in Anchorage and will try to drop by AVO South. + UAF – David Fee • Next week is AGU – a lot of folks will be attending. • Practice sessions for AGU will be held on Thursday. + AVO South – Matt Haney • Matt has emailed out a draft of the next duty schedule that runs December 29 through August 4. The final schedule will be out later this week. • The VHP Program Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday through Thursday 10:00 am – noon. Haney, Coombs, Dietterich and Orr will be attending. • Matt may be attending AGU next week. He is waiting on approval. + DISCIPLINE MEETINGS • The monthly remote sensing meeting is scheduled for Monday at 1:00 pm. • The monthly communications meeting has been canceled. + USGS – Matt Haney • This is a Quicktime week. • EPAPS are due December 12. • Volunteer forms are due. • CoMeet travel is still waiting on approval. The CoMeet is scheduled for January 27 and 28 in Fairbanks. Make sure all travel arrangements are refundable. • Dave Schneider will post a SharePoint link for who has active travel credit cards. • Stephanie Prejean will be giving the VSC seminar on Thursday. She will be speaking on the Santorini Seismic Crisis. • There was a discussion on office heating issues. It is suggested that logging building temperatures would be a good idea. • Dave Schneider suggested a duty scientist meeting next Monday after the staff meeting to discuss the new VONA format.
