Posted by: cheryl searcy (csearcy@usgs.gov), Mon Jan 5, 2026 20:14 (2014 UTC)-- AVO Meeting notes for January 5, 2026 Great Sitkin: Orange Shishaldin: Yellow Ahyi: Yellow SIC: Matt Haney CS: David Fee Duty Scientist: Kristi Wallace AVO/CNMI Duty Remote Sensor: Hans Schwaiger (Tim Orr is covering Monday and Tuesday) AVO/CNMI Duty Seismologist: David Fee Primary alarms: David Fee Secondary alarms: Kristi Wallace DUTY SCIENTIST REPORT– John Lyons + GREAT SITKIN (Orange/Watch): No major changes. When the clouds parted, satellite and webcam views showed a very slowly growing lava dome. Weakly elevated surface temperatures observed in mid-IR images on the 30th and 1st. Weak seismicity occasionally observed. + SHISHALDIN (Yellow/Advisory): No major changes. Steaming from the summit was observed in satellite and webcam images when clear. One report of "extremely weakly" elevated surface temperatures in WorldView SWIR imagery from the 28th. Low-frequency seismic and infrasound activity continued all week with wind often obscuring infrasound signals and sometimes obscuring the seismic. + CNMI/AHYI (Yellow/Advisory): No activity observed in satellite or Wake Island data over the week. Saipan: I received a call on the duty phone from CNMI HSEM on Jan. 1 requesting a data check due to multiple reports of "tremors" felt around Saipan. The on-duty staff had checked the USGS recent earthquakes page but nothing was coming up so they call the AVO duty phone. The two local seismic stations had recorded a recent local quake not seen on Guam or other regional stations. S-P time indicated that it was a small local quake. I sent some images of the event and a brief description by email that was used in a press release by HSEM. No further activity was observed. + RESUSPENDED ASH: There were several SIGMETS issued by NOAA early in the week for resuspended ash at volcanoes in the Aleutians. There was a SIGMET for a resuspension event at Katmai on Wednesday for which AVO released an information statement. NET OPS/FIELDWORK: Max Enders Color Code: + Great Sitkin – All stations working. + Shishaldin – All stations working except some SSBA data gaps. Network, Multi-Station and Array Outages: + Port Heiden (#aniakchak, #veniaminof (north side) - 2025-12-13 07:07:08 UTC Power outage is ONGOING. --Sand Point (SDPI array) - outage continues, partner-procured internet outage – + Adak – Recurring power outages, no update from TDX, but they are working on multiple issues. + Kenai Infrasound Array – Outage due to station power issues – Critically low voltage starting ~2025-01-02 21:00 UTC. Single Station Issues -Wrangell - Tolsona sites continue to have minor data gaps at IRIS. AVO Winston copy complete. -Iliamna – ILLG and ILCB remain out, ILSW power getting low. -Shishaldin – SSBA/AV36 and ISNN/AV38 low power, GNSS powered off at both stations to conserve power for seismic data. -Westdahl – WECS seismic offline to conserve power for GNSS and radios. -Akutan -LVA out due to low voltage. -Okmok – OKAK and OKWE no telemetry. –Bogoslof – BOGO completely out last week. -Atka – KOSE/KONE data gaps last week, presumably rime ice at repeater. -Adak – Infrasound element 6 is not working and element 2 reported as having reversed polarity. -Little Sitkin -Gappy data and outages from LSNW and LSSA probably due to icing on LSSA radio antennas. OPEN ANNOUNCEMENTS + ADGGS – Lee Zirnheld • Scott Crass will be back in the office tomorrow • The influenza rate has been rising exponentially in Alaska and this is a bad one. Wash hands frequently and please wear masks or stay home if sick. + UAF – David Fee • A draft CoMeet agenda will be going out this week. Please review. If you want items added or have ideas, please let David know asap. Also please let David know if you know of guests that will be attending. + AVO South – Matt Haney • Non-net field proposals are due January 9. • Bill Chadwick recently contacted Matt regarding Ahyi. Bill will be leading an Ahyi discussion tomorrow at 1:00 pm. If you are interested in listening in or participating, please email Matt and he will send you the zoom link. • The USGS VSC has instituted a new award spear headed by Mike Poland called “You’re the bomb”. The first recipient of this award is AVO’s own Matt Loewen. Congratualtions to Matt for this well earned recognition and thank you for your hard work and dedication. If you wish to nominate someone for this award the form can be found on the right side of the "Awards" section of the VSC Sharepoint site (https://doimspp.sharepoint.com/sites/usgs-VSC/Admin/SitePages/Awards.aspx). • Stay tuned for the scheduling of the next monthly geology discipline meeting this week or next. On a related note, there was a question of whether CoMeet breakout meeting should take place at the monthly discipline meetings. Guidance will be forth coming. + USGS – Matt Haney • This is a Quicktime week. • EPAPS are due this Friday by close of business. • Matt met with Chris Zimmerman last week. There are offices available in Glen Olds for folks if the temperature in offices in Grace Hall is too cold. Michelle Coombs suggested having an AVO general office set up in Glen Olds that could be used on a temporary basis when the need arises. • The front door of Grace Hall has been malfunctioning. It has been reported. • Tim Orr will be heading to HVO this Friday for two weeks. • Charles Olin will be out of the office on Friday.
