Posted by: (), Mon Dec 15, 2025 20:46 (2046 UTC)-- AVO Meeting notes for December 15, 2025 Great Sitkin: Orange Shishaldin: Yellow Acting SIC: Matt Loewen Acting CS: Ronni Grapenthin Duty Scientist: Tim Orr Duty Remote Sensor: Tim Orr Duty Seismologist: John Lyons CNMI duty seismologist: John Lyons CNMI Remote Sensor: Tim Orr Primary alarms: John Lyons Secondary alarms: Tim Orr AVO radio: Abbey Nastin DUTY SCIENTIST REPORT– Chris Waythomas + GREAT SITKIN (Orange/Watch): • The eruption continues, but seismicity and effusion are low. • A report from Reston on December 12 indicated effusion was ongoing to the south side of the dome, and the southeast half of the dome appears to still be inflating • Satellite views intermittently clear throughout the week revealing barely elevated surface temperatures on December 9, 10, 13, 14. + SHISHALDIN (Yellow/Advisory): • Unrest continues like the past weeks. Elevated LP and infrasound activity throughout the week, but infrasound detections obscured by high winds much of the week • Steaming observed in web camera images all week. • No evidence of elevated temperatures in satellite data, except possibly on December 9. This was likely due to hot emissions and not lava effusion. • AAWU issued a SIGMET Saturday morning (December 13) to say that resuspended ash was evident seen in satellite images. High winds were generating plumes of dust visible in satellite imagery Saturday (12/13) and Sunday (12/14). Dust plumes were also visible extending from Westdahl and other volcanic areas along the Alaska Peninsula. + KATMAI (Green/Normal): • Information Statement on resuspended ash issued on December 12 (Friday). + CNMI/AHYI: • Nothing observed all week • No Wake Island detections last week. NET OPS/FIELDWORK: Ellie Boyce Color Code: Great Sitkin – All stations working. Shishaldin – All stations working except some SSBA data gaps. Network, Multi-Station and Array Outages: --Port Heiden (#aniakchak, #veniaminof (north side) - 2025-12-13 07:07:08 UTC Power outage, details unknown at this point. Single Station Issues -Wrangell – WAZA out since Saturday afternoon. Tolsona sites continue to have data gaps at IRIS. AVO Winston copy complete. -Iliamna – ILLG remains out, ILSW power getting low. -Augustine – AUW data gaps last week -Shishaldin – SSBA/AV38 and ISNN/AV38 low power, GNSS powered off at both stations to conserve power for seismic data. -Westdahl – WECS seismic offline to conserve power for GNSS and radios. -Akutan -LVA out due to low voltage. -Okmok – OKAK and OKWE no telemetry. -Bogoslof – BOGO completely out last week, it was on back on briefly on 11/12 and 11/13. -Adak – Infrasound element 6 is not working and element 2 reported as having reversed polarity. -Little Sitkin -Gappy data and outages from LSNW and LSSA probably due to icing on LSSA radio antennas. OPEN ANNOUNCEMENTS + ADGGS – Scott Crass • All are in this week • Scott has been working on getting samples sent from the University of Wisconsin shipped to the DMC. • Ian Brewster is here this week but out next week and the week after. • Hiring is complete for the Geologist 4 position. Janine Andress begins April 22. + UAF – Ronni Grapenthin • There is a small crew at UAF this week with folks at AGU. • David Fee returns Dec. 27. Ronni is acting until the afternoon of Dec. 22 then Jess Larsen takes over until David’s return. • The current deadline for the BV Shishaldin special issue is January 1 but will likely get bumped into the Spring. If your publication plans have changed, please let Ronni Grapenthin, Matt Loewen or Taryn Lopez know. + USGS – Matt Loewen • If you are attending the CoMeet in Fairbanks please check the spreadsheet and make sure your information is correct. • The new duty schedule has been emailed out. • Dave Schneider led a duty scientist meeting following the staff meeting to go over the new VONA format. • Charles Olin will be on annual leave the week Christmas. • Matt Loewen will be on annual leave the week of Christmas and the next week.
