Posted by: cheryl searcy (csearcy@usgs.gov), Mon Jan 26, 2026 21:13 (2113 UTC)-- AVO Meeting notes for January 26, 2026 Great Sitkin: Orange Shishaldin: Yellow Pavlof: Yellow Ahyi: Yellow SIC: Matt Haney CS: David Fee Duty Scientist: Hannah Dietterich AVO/CNMI Duty Remote Sensor: Hannah Dietterich AVO/CNMI Duty Seismologist: Scott Stihler Primary alarms: Matt Haney Secondary alarms: Hannah Dietterich AVO radio: Scott Crass DUTY SCIENTIST REPORT– Jordan Lubbers + GREAT SITKIN (Orange/Watch): No major changes. Some clear looks show active steaming (1/18) and snow-free areas (1/22) at the active portion of the flow. Seismic activity remains low. + SHISHALDIN (Yellow/Advisory): No major changes. Low-frequency seismic and infrasound activity detected all week, when not too windy. Satellite data show barely elevated surface temperatures on 1/19, 21, and 23. Clear webcam images typically show a steam plume. + PAVLOF (Green/Normal): Seismic activity decreased to background levels - moved from YELLOW/ADVISORY to GREEN/NORMAL. + SPURR (Green/Normal): There was a nice sized Earthquake at Spurr on Saturday, Jan. 24. LP activity seems a bit elevated over the past few weeks. There have been 5 deep LPs located during the past 2 weeks which seems to be within the average (2 and 4 located in the past 2 – 2 week ranges.) + AUGUSTINE (Green/Normal): There were 8 earthquakes located near the summit in the past week. + TRIDENT/NOVARUPTA (Green/Normal). There was a slight uptick in located earthquakes between Novarupta and Trident on Sunday, January 18 – with 9 earthquakes located. + CNMI/AHYI (Yellow/Advisory): No activity observed. + OTHER VOLCANOES – Kilauea • There has been a high ash plume – NOAA has it to 30,000 ft – with a heavy fall out of tephra debris. • There is an SO2 component observed in satellite data. • Scott Crass has been in contact with Katie Mulliken to spin up the Is Ash Falling web site for HVO. Kristi Wallace has been contacted to help. + Operational Notes: • Survived my first duty scientist rotation! • Hannah will be heading to Fairbanks for the Coordination Meeting this afternoon. She will be forwarding the duty phone to Jordan while she is on the plane. NET OPS/FIELDWORK: Ellie Boyce Color Code: • Great Sitkin – All stations working. • Shishaldin – All stations working except some SSBA data gaps. Network, Multi-Station and Array Outages: • All networks: flickers in field network connectivity this morning likely related to scheduled maintenance on DOI Alaska Gateway devices from 1200-1330 UTC. • Port Heiden (#aniakchak, #veniaminof (north side) - 2025-12-13 07:07:08 UTC Power outage is ONGOING. – The FAA is attempting to access their Port Heiden facility next week (Tuesday or Thursday), even sooner than our last communication. Grid power in the village remains up, and the exact point of breakage at or near the facility remains unknown. • King Salmon: Katmai/Peulik - many little power flickers over the past week, but nothing exceeding our backup. Single Station Issues: • Wrangell - Tolsona sites (WASW, WACK) continue to have minor data gaps at IRIS. AVO Winston copy complete. • Spurr - Small data gaps are likely to due radio link degradation by ice and snow. Nothing is hard out at this point, and voltages look decent with some evidence of recent charging at e.g. SPCR. • Iliamna – ILLG is completely out, ILSW power getting low. ILCB is currently back up. • Hague – D. Fee noted in the SOH channel that HAG low frequency noise worse in the last month. • Shishaldin – SSBA/AV36 and ISNN/AV38 low power, GNSS powered off at both stations to conserve power for seismic data. • Westdahl – WECS seismic offline to conserve power for GNSS and radios. WEBT hit LVD. • Akutan - LVA, AKHS and AKMO remain out. • Okmok – OKAK and OKWE no telemetry. • Bogoslof – BOGO completely out last week. • Atka – KOSE/KONE short data gaps last week, presumably rime ice at repeater. • Adak Area – ADKI Infrasound element 6 is not working and element 2 reported as having reversed polarity. To the west, there have been some data gaps on sites that repeat through TASE gateway. This could be due to rime icing, or an antenna alignment issue. • Little Sitkin - LSNW and LSSA are showing intermittent gaps, likely due to rime ice at the high repeater. Operations: • Tom Parker is working on manually backfilling data from our telemetry outage on December 21. The good news is that the data is there thanks to the Merbok work. OPEN ANNOUNCEMENTS + ADGGS – Scott Crass • There is a GEODIVA meet up today • Preparations are ongoing for the Coordination Meeting this week. + UAF – David Fee • The final agenda for the Coordination Meeting was sent out today. Guidance for in person breakout meeting is included – please read. • Logistic for the CoMeet. Lunches, beverages and snacks will be ordered to be on site. You can pay David either by VENMO or cash. You will need to purchase a parking pass from the blue kiosk in front of the building. It is a good idea to bring a water bottle. • Diana Roman is in Fairbanks for the Coordination Meeting. She will be giving a talk on SZ4D today. + AVO South – Matt Haney • Decisions have been made on the non-net field proposals and emails have been sent out. + USGS – Matt Haney • Jackie Verna is holding an Ask Admin session on Thursday at 1:00 pm. This one will be on HR for operational employees. • Michelle Coombs and Matt Haney will be giving volcano related talks to classes at Romig middle school on Friday. • Matt issued an open invitation to anyone who is interested in participating on a planning committee for an AVO open house day later this year (April or May). If you are interested, contact Matt. • Max Enders reported that the firearms refresher training and bear aware training are on the calendar. If you need this training sign up asap. Slots are limited and they fill up fast. • Dave Schneider reminded everyone to take their travel credit card.
