[AVO-OPS] AVO LOG- AVO Meeting notes for December 1, 2025
Posted by: Matthew Haney (mhaney@usgs.gov), Tue Dec 2, 2025 00:56 (0056 UTC)-- AVO Meeting notes for December 1, 2025 Great Sitkin: Orange Shishaldin: Yellow Ahyi: Yellow SIC: Matt Haney CS: David Fee Duty Scientist: Michelle Coombs Duty Remote Sensor: Michelle Coombs Duty Seismologist: Scott Stihler CNMI Duty seismologist: Scott Stihler CNMI Remote Sensor: Michelle Coombs Primary alarms: Matt Haney Secondary alarms: Michelle Coombs AVO radio: Hannah Dietterich DUTY SCIENTIST REPORT– Dave Schneider + GREAT SITKIN (Orange/Watch): • The eruption continues. Reston reports from 20-26 November, effusion continues with movement from the vent spreading to the southwest through the southeast with minimal advancement. The southeast half of the lava dome appears to still be slightly inflating. • Seismicity remains low. • Visual observations mostly obscured by clouds. Barely elevated surface temperature observed one evening. + SHISHALDIN (Yellow/Advisory): • Elevated LP activity continues with some hints of tremor on a few days. Infrasound amplitude increased towards the end of last week with some of the strongest signals seen lately. • Vigorous steaming observed in web camera and satellite on Wednesday and Thursday. PIREPS of steam on Thursday. Coordinated with Anchorage VAAC to make sure that they understood that it was not erupting. No evidence of elevated temperatures in satellite data. Reston reports that between early October and late November a new small 5 m diameter crater has formed about 40 m east of the main crater. Chris tried to take a look at this but couldn't confirm it; Matt Loewen will follow-up with Reston. • The gas group reports a medium confidence SO2 observation 23 November with a value of 0.8 kt. No other detections reported by them due to noise from the lack of UV. + CNMI/AHYI (Yellow/Advisory): • No plumes observed in the one clear Worldview and one clear Sentinel image on November 30. A couple of potential/likely Wake Island detections late last week. + OTHER ACTIVITY OF NOTE: • Some quakes near Martin on Friday. + FIELD WORK: • Boat trip to Barry Arm to collect campaign infrasound currently planned for Wednesday but dependent on weather NET OPS/FIELDWORK: Ellie Boyce + NETWORKS: • Color Code: o Great Sitkin – All stations working o Shishaldin – All stations working. o Network, Multi-Station and Array Outages – --Adak – 2025-11-23 23:00:17 UTC Power outage update. AC power restored at ~2025-12-01 02:00:07 UTC. Backup WAN connection is still offline, and power will likely continue to be intermittent as TDX continues work on maintenance on the generators throughout the winter. -- Katmai Network – Fewer gaps last week, but antenna icing is still causing some intermittent seismic data gaps. -- Peulik Network – Fewer gaps last week, but antenna icing is still causing some intermittent seismic data gaps. • Single Station Issues: o Iliamna – ILLG out due to telemetry issue, likely a broken radio antenna. o Augustine – AUJA data gaps last week, recent spike in reflective power coincident with weather indicates possible antenna icing. o Shishaldin – SSBA/AV38 and ISNN/AV38 low power, GNSS powered off at both stations to conserve power for seismic data. o Westdahl – WECS seismic offline to conserve power for GNSS and radios. o Akutan – LVA out due to low voltage. o Makushin – Gappy data from MGOD and MAPS probably due to icing on MREP radio G1 antenna. o Okmok – OKAK and OKWE no telemetry. o Bogoslof – BOGO completely out last week, it was on back on briefly on 11/12 and 11/13. o Korovin – All stations online, but KOSE and KONE with real time seismic gaps. o Adak – Infrasound element 6 is not working and element 2 reported as having reversed polarity. o Little Sitkin – Gappy data and outages from LSNW and LSSA probably due to icing on LSSA radio antennas. • Overall - Twice-daily gaps issue for data acquired in Anchorage seems to be resolved after configuration update to Grace Hall routers. Also, there was about a half-hour outage of data at around 12:00 UTC today that may be related to some ANTHC things. OPEN ANNOUNCEMENTS + ADGGS – Scott Crass • Standard week, everyone in office. • Multimedia database ongoing, including creating keywords that will be reviewed more broadly. + UAF – Taryn Lopez • In Mattermost, Taryn posted an SO2 timeseries for Shishaldin since January of this year. The detections have decreased substantially since November, likely due to an increase in noise due to low wintertime UV. The team did have one medium confidence detection last week (11/23/2025 22:59) that yielded a relatively high SO2 mass for this unrest period of ~0.8 kt. Winds prevented emission rate calculation. • See AVO-North notes for more highlights. + AVO South – Matt Haney • Matt will likely attend AGU Dec. 15-19 and will organize for there to be an Acting SIC. • A reminder about the End of Field Season Meeting Tuesday Dec. 9. • Some AVO folks will attend the virtual VHP Fall Council Meeting Dec. 10-11 for 2 hours each day. • The current duty schedule runs through Dec. 28. Matt will start a new schedule with the aim of sending it out mid-month. Please send Matt any special requests or ideas about the new schedule. + USGS – Matt Haney • EPAPs due by Dec. 12, see Seth Moran’s email from Tuesday last week. • An EARS alert was sent out at 9:07am this morning about the building closure due to ASD having an ice day.
