KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 17-2020
Kamchatkan and Kuriles Volcanic Activity
April 24, 2020, 00:07 UTC (April 24, 2020, 12:07 KST)
KVERT monitor active volcanoes of Kamchatka and the Kurile Islands. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation.

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO (CAVW #300270)
56.64 N, 161.32 E; Elevation 10768 ft (3283 m), the dome elevation ~8200 ft (2500 m)
Aviation Colour Code is ORANGE
The explosive-extrusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800-49,200 ft (10-15 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.
A growth of the lava dome continues, a strong fumarolic activity sometimes with some amount of ash, and an incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches accompanie this process. Satellite data showed a thermal anomaly over the volcano all week; plumes of resuspended ash extended for 140 km to the northeast of the volcano on 18 and 20 April.

KLYUCHEVSKOY VOLCANO (CAVW #300260)
56.06 N, 160.64 E; Elevation 15580 ft (4750 m)
Aviation Colour Code is ORANGE
A moderate explosive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 16,400-23,000 ft (5-7 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.
A moderate explosive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues, the Strombolian activity and gas-steam plumes with some amount of ash on the height up to 6 km a.s.l. were noted all week. The lava flow began to move along Apakhonchich chute on the southeastern volcanic flank from 18:00 UTC on 18 April. Satellite data showed a bright thermal anomaly over the summit volcanic crater all week; gas-steam plumes with some amount of ash extended for 470 km to the eastern directions of the volcano all week.

EBEKO VOLCANO (CAVW #290380)
50.69 N, 156.01 E; Elevation 3792 ft (1156 m)
Aviation Colour Code is ORANGE
A moderate activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700 ft (6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft and airport of Severo-Kurilsk.
A moderate activity of the volcano continues. Satellite data showed a thermal anomaly over the volcano on 18 and 20 April, the volcano was quiet or obscured by clouds in the other days of week.

Aviation Colour Code is YELLOW
A moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano continues. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.
A moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano continues. Satellite data showed a thermal anomaly over the lava dome all week.

A moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 10,000- 13,100 ft (3-4 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircrafts.
A moderate activity of the volcano continues. Satellite data showed a thermal anomaly over the volcano on 17 and 21 April; gas-steam plumes containing some amount of ash extended for 80 km to the southeast of the volcano on 17 and 21 April. The volcano was quiet or obscured by clouds in the other days of week.

In Russia, KVERT, on behalf of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FEB RAS, is responsible for providing information on volcanic activity to international air navigation services for the airspace users.
KVERT scientists are available in the office from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM (KST) 7 days in week and by phone during the evenings since 2005. KVERT produces daily satellite monitoring (since 2002 till now) of Kamchatkan and Kuriles Volcanoes to using the information system (IS) “Remote monitoring of the activity of Kamchatka and Kuriles volcanoes (VolSatView)”, which was created in 2011-2014 the joint efforts of the scientists of KVERT IVS FEB RAS, the Space Research Institute RAS, the Computing Center FEB RAS and the Far Eastern Scientific Center Planet. IS continues to evolve. KVERT analyses information from remote scientific observation stations and seismic data for volcanoes: Alaid, Avachinsky, Bezymianny, Gorely, Karymsky, Kizimen, Klyuchevskoy, Koryaksky, Mutnovsky, Plosky Tolbachik, Sheveluch, Ushkovsky, Zhupanovsky (from the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey RAS); and other information to monitor activity at Kamchatkan and Kuriles Volcanoes.
