KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 09-2019 Kamchatkan and Kuriles Volcanic Activity February 28, 2019, 22:32 UTC (March 01, 2019, 10:32 KST) KVERT monitor 30 active volcanoes of Kamchatka and 6 active volcanoes of Northern Kuriles. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation. Ash explosions up to 32,800-49,200 ft (10-15 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft. A growth of the lava dome continues (a viscous lava blocks extrude out on the northern part of it), a strong fumarolic activity and an incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches accompanies this process. According to video and satellite data, strong gas-steam plumes sometimes with some amount of ash on the height up to 4.0-5.0 km a.s.l. drifted for about 100 km to the south-west and east from the volcano on 21, 25 and 27 February. Ash explosions up to 13,100-19,700 ft (4-6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircrafts. A moderate eruptive activity of the volcano continues. Satellite data shows ash plumes on the height up to 3.5 km a.s.l. extending for about 216 km to the eastern directions from the volcano on 22 and 24-26 February. A moderate explosive activity of the volcano continues. According to visual data by volcanologists from Severo-Kurilsk, explosions sent ash up to 2.5 km a.s.l. on 22-26 February; ashfalls were noted at Severo-Kurilsk on 23-26 February.
