KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 04-2019 Kamchatkan and Kuriles Volcanic Activity January 24, 2019, 23:25 UTC (January 25, 2019, 11:25 KST) KVERT monitor 30 active volcanoes of Kamchatka and 6 active volcanoes of Northern Kuriles. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation. Ash explosions up to 32,800-49,200 ft (10-15 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft. A growth of the lava dome continues (a viscous lava blocks extrude out on the northern part of it), a strong fumarolic activity and an incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches accompanies this process. According to video and satellite data, continuously all week, a strong gas-steam plume with some amount of ash on the height 4.5 km a.s.l. drifted for about 100 km to the west and south-west from the volcano. The strong explosive eruption of Bezymianny occurred at 16:10 UTC on 20 January: explosions sent ash up to 10-11 km a.s.l., and the ash plume drifted for about 870 km to the north-west from the volcano.
