VONA/KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 50-2016 Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity December 15, 2016, 23:43 UTC (December 16, 2016, 11:43 KST) KVERT monitor 30 active volcanoes of Kamchatka and 6 active volcanoes of Northern Kuriles. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation. Ash explosions up to 26,200-32,800 ft (8-10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft. A growth of the lava dome continues (a viscous lava flow reveal in the northern its part), strong fumarole activity, ash explosions, hot avalanches and an incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches accompany this process. Satellite data by KVERT showed strong explosions sent ash up to 10-11 km a.s.l. on 09 December, and ash plumes extended for about 880 km to the north-northeast from the volcano on 09-10 December. Strong ash explosions up to 49,200 ft (15 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time during this day or next days. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft. Satellite data by KVERT and video data show a growth of thermal anomaly temperature continues from 05 December till now. A gas-steam plume containing small amount of ash drifted for about 118 km to the west of the volcano on 15 December. Ash explosions up to 16,400 ft (5 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft and airport of Severo-Kurilsk. A moderate activity of the volcano continues. According to the data by observers from Severo-Kurilsk (Paramushir Island, Northern Kuriles), gas-steam plumes containing small anount of ash rose up to 1.5 km a.s.l. and extended for about 6 km to the north from Ebeko volcano on 08-09 December. Satellite data by KVERT showed a weak thermal anomaly over the volcano on 08-09 December, but ash plumes were not detected on these days.
