KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 01-2019 Kamchatkan and Kuriles Volcanic Activity January 04, 2019, 00:51 UTC (January 04, 2019, 12:51 KST) KVERT monitor 30 active volcanoes of Kamchatka and 6 active volcanoes of Northern Kuriles. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation. Ash explosions up to 32,800-49,200 ft (10-15 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft. A growth of the lava dome continues (a viscous lava blocks extrude out on the northern part of it), a strong fumarolic activity and an incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches accompanies this process. Strong explosive event occurred on 30 December: explosions sent ash up to 10 km a.s.l., ash plumes drifted to the north-east from the volcano, and to the west-south-west from the volcano. After that, a wide ash plume drifted to the south - in Klyuchi and Kozyrevsk occurred ashfalls. According to video and satellite data, continuously on 27-31 December and 01-03 January, a strong gas-steam plume with some amount of ash on the height 7-10 km a.s.l. drifted for about 440 km to the different directions from the volcano. Ash explosions up to 19,700 ft (6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft and airport of Severo-Kurilsk. A moderate explosive activity of the volcano continues. According to visual data by volcanologists from Severo-Kurilsk, explosions sent ash up to 3.5 km a.s.l.; ash clouds drifted to the south-eastern directions from the volcano.
