VONA/KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 15-2017 Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity April 14, 2017, 03:46 UTC (April 14, 2017, 15:46 KST) KVERT monitor 30 active volcanoes of Kamchatka and 6 active volcanoes of Northern Kuriles. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation. Ash explosions up to 26,200-32,800 ft (8-10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft. A growth of the lava dome continues (a viscous lava flow reveal in the northern its part), strong fumarole activity, ash explosions, hot avalanches and an incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches accompany this process. A gas-steam activity of the volcano continues. Effusing of the lava flow occur at the north-western flank on the lava dome. Ash explosions up to 19,700-26,200 ft (6-8 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft. A moderate activity of the volcano continues. According to data by observers from South Kamchatka Sanctuary, explosions sent ash up to 7 km a.s.l. on 09 April. According to the data by observers from Severo-Kurilsk (Paramushir Island, Northern Kuriles), several ash bursts up to 2.6 km a.s.l. occurred last week; weak ashfalls were noted at Severo-Kurilsk on 06 and 12 April.
