KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 49-2022 Kamchatkan and Kuriles Volcanic Activity December 08, 2022, 22:14 UTC (December 09, 2022, 10:14 KST) KVERT monitor active volcanoes of Kamchatka and the Kurile Islands. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation. Ash explosions up to 10-15 km (32,800-49,200 ft) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft. A growth of the lava dome continues, a strong fumarole activity, an incandescence of the lava dome, explosions, and hot avalanches accompanies this process. According to visual data by volcanologists from Severo-Kurilsk, explosions sent ash up to 2.5 km a.s.l. on 01-02, and 07 December; ash clouds moved to the northeast of the volcano. The eruption is accompanied by gas-steam activity of the volcano and sometimes by the collapses of hot avalanches along the lava dome slopes.
