KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 19-2020 Kamchatkan and Kuriles Volcanic Activity May 07, 2020, 23:20 UTC (May 08, 2020, 11:20 KST) KVERT monitor active volcanoes of Kamchatka and the Kurile Islands. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation. Ash explosions up to 32,800-49,200 ft (10-15 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft. A growth of the lava dome continues, a strong fumarolic activity sometimes with some amount of ash, and an incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches accompanie this process. Ash explosions up to 16,400-23,000 ft (5-7 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft. A moderate explosive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues, the Strombolian and gas-steam activity was observing all week. The lava flow continues to move along Apakhonchich chute on the southeastern volcanic flank. Ash explosions up to 19,700 ft (6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft and airport of Severo-Kurilsk. A moderate explosive eruption of the volcano continues. According to visual data by volcanologists from Severo-Kurilsk, explosions sent ash up to 2.6 km a.s.l. all week; ash clouds drifted to the eastern directions of the volcano; ashfalls were noted at Severo-Kurilsk on 03-05 May. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft. A moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 10,000- 13,100 ft (3-4 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircrafts. A moderate activity of the volcano continues.
