KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 52-2018 Kamchatkan and Kuriles Volcanic Activity December 28, 2018, 01:04 UTC (December 28, 2018, 13:04 KST) KVERT monitor 30 active volcanoes of Kamchatka and 6 active volcanoes of Northern Kuriles. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation. Ash explosions up to 32,800-49,200 ft (10-15 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircrafts. A moderate eruptive activity of the volcano continues. The meteorological conditions (cyclones) in the northern part of Kamchatka caused a strong increased a gas-steam activity of the volcano, on the background of which, on December 26-27, explosive events repeatedly occurred with ash emission up to 6-9 km a.s.l. According to videodata, strong explosions sent ash up to 9 km a.s.l. on 26 December. Ash explosions up to 19,700 ft (6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft and airport of Severo-Kurilsk. A moderate explosive activity of the volcano continues. According to visual data by volcanologists from Severo-Kurilsk, explosions sent ash up to 4.5 km a.s.l. all week; ash clouds drifted to the northern and north-eastern directions from the volcano; ashfalls were noted at Severo-Kurilsk on 23 December.
