Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation. The extrusive-effusive eruption of the volcano continues: a lava is extruded out in the explosive crater of the Young Sheveluch, it is accompanied by powerful gas-steam activity, and sometimes an incandescence of the lava dome. A powerful gas-steam activity is also observed at the area of the Karan dome. Ash explosions up to 7-8 km (23,000-26,200 ft) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft. Against the background of explosive activity of the Strombolian type (lava fountaining in the volcanic crater), the lava flows continue to effuse along the Apakhonchichsky and Kozyrevsky (from 17 October) chutes on the southern slopes of the volcano. Ash explosions up to 6 km (19,700 ft) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft and airport of Severo-Kurilsk. The moderate explosive eruption of the volcano continues. According to visual data from Severo-Kurilsk, explosions sent ash up to 4 km a.s.l. on 14 and 19 October; ash clouds moved to the eastern directions of the volcano. Satellite data by KVERT showed: at 04:30 UTC on 18 October, 2023, a paroxysmal explosive eruption of the volcano occurred with ash removal up to 11 km a.s.l. The ash cloud moved for about 850 km, first to the northeast, then to the northwest of the volcano. A small ashfall was noted in the Kozyrevsk. The thermal anomaly over the volcano was observed during the week.
