VONA/KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 51-2017 Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity December 22, 2017, 03:00 UTC (December 22, 2017, 15:00 KST) KVERT monitor 30 active volcanoes of Kamchatka and 6 active volcanoes of Northern Kuriles. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation. Ash explosions up to 32,800-49,200 ft (10-15 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft. The strong explosive eruption occurred on 20 December: explosions sent ash up to 15 km a.s.l., ash plumes extended for about 320 km to the north-east from the volcano. Ash explosions up to 16,400 ft (5 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft and airport of Severo-Kurilsk. A moderate eruptive activity of the volcano continues. According to visual data by volcanologists from Severo-Kurilsk, explosions sent ash up to 3.5 km a.s.l. on 18-19 and 21-22 December.
