VONA/KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 49-2017 Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity December 08, 2017, 02:15 UTC (December 08, 2017, 14:15 KST) KVERT monitor 30 active volcanoes of Kamchatka and 6 active volcanoes of Northern Kuriles. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation. Ash explosions up to 32,800-49,200 ft (10-15 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft. A growth of the lava dome continues (a viscous lava flow reveal in the northern its part), strong fumarole activity, ash explosions, hot avalanches and an incandescence of the dome blocks and hot avalanches accompany this process. A strong explosive event occurred on 04 December: explosions sent ash up to 10.5 km a.s.l. According to satellite data by KVERT, ash plumes drifted for about 500 km in two different directions - on the height about 10.5 km a.s.l. to the northeast and on the height about 5 km a.s.l. to the east from the volcano. Ash plumes rose up to 5.5 km a.s.l. and ash plumes extended for about 180 km on 05-08 December; a weak thermal anomaly over the volcano was noting on 05-06 December. According to visual data by volcanologists from Severo-Kurilsk, explosions sent ash up to 2.0 km a.s.l. on 02-05 and 07 December, ashfalls were noting at Severo-Kurilsk on 01-04 and 07 December.
