VONA/KVERT WEEKLY INFORMATION RELEASE 20-2018 Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity May 18, 2018, 00:16 UTC (May 18, 2018, 12:16 KST) KVERT monitor 30 active volcanoes of Kamchatka and 6 active volcanoes of Northern Kuriles. Not all of these volcanoes had eruptions in historical time, however they are potentially active and therefore are of concern to aviation. Ash explosions up to 26,240 ft (8 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircrafts. A heightened activity of the volcano continues. According to visual and satellite data, a strong event occurred at 1515 UTC on 14 May: explosions sent ash up to 10.5 km a.s.l., ash clouds was staying for about 8 hours over Klyuchevskaya group of volcanoes, gradually dissipating. A hot avalanche and an incandescence of the volcanic summit at night were noted. Short gas-steam plumes containing small amount of ash sometimes were detected last week. Ash explosions up to 16,400 ft (5 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft and airport of Severo-Kurilsk. A moderate explosive activity of the volcano continues. According to visual data by volcanologists from Severo-Kurilsk, explosions sent ash up to 2.8 km a.s.l. on 12-14 May.
