Women of Science gives school-aged girls a chance to discover the fun of science and connect with women who work in STEM fields, through hands-on workshops led by women working in these fields. This event, sponsored by BP and the University of Alaska, has been held for 24 years, and we’re proud to say the program is growing and has become Girl Scouts of Alaska’s signature event! We can’t do it without you! Do you:  Like science, technology, engineering and/or math?  Enjoy interacting with kids?  Want a chance to encourage girls in STEM fields? Then we have a job for you! This is a one day (or half-day) commitment. We have workshop ideas for those who need them. Bring a friend, and come have fun with science! The key to making this event a success is active, hands-on participation for the girls. We want workshops that give every girl a chance to participate, and to experience something new. We want girls to get their hands dirty, meet women that are passionate about STEM fields, and be exposed to new ideas. Here’s how it works: Girls in grades K-3 participate in morning workshops, and girls in grades 4-12 participate in the afternoon. We provide lunch for all presenters. In Soldotna, we expect approximately 100 girls to attend (workshop sizes of 10 - 15) and this means we’ll need up to 8-10 presenters (or presenting teams) for each session. By signing up to be a presenter, you’ll be one of dozens of women helping out that day to encourage girls in the sciences across the state! Women of Science & Technology Day encompasses many fields, including engineering, architecture, aviation, oil exploration, construction, photography, ecology, archaeology, computer science, medical fields including physical therapy, and more. Hello Dale - We're glad you enjoy the cameras. The non-functioning cameras are in our field repair plans for this summer, and hopefully the weather cooperates for getting all of our tasks accomplished. Hi Susan - The Alaska Earthquake Center didn't show a recent earthquake near Fairbanks for Sunday morning: http://earthquake.alaska.edu/earthquakes , so I'm inclined to blame military exercises at Ft Wainwright. (I also live in Fairbanks and experienced some large booms over the weekend.) Hello Chloe - I don't have the answers to some of your questions. AVO isn't part of who visits Pavlof - Pavlof lies within the Alaska Peninsula National Wildlife Refuge - the folks at http://www.fws.gov/refuge/alaska_peninsula/ might be able to better answer your question. The closest community to Pavlof is Belkofski, 23 miles southwest of Pavlof. It isn't an easy place to get to, as there aren't any roads there. During an explosive eruption, the ash cloud might generate lightning, and ash in the atmosphere can darken the sky or reduce the amount of sunlight that reaches the ground. Volcanic gases can create acid rain. Very large volcanic eruptions can affect climate (weather vs climate: weather is what conditions of the atmosphere are over a short period of time, and climate is how the atmosphere "behaves" over relatively long periods of time), but that is a very large topic. It's a stratocone, within the larger Emmons Lake Volcanic Center. Typical Pavlof eruptions produce spatter-fed lava flows and lahars (volcanic mudflows) on the flanks of the volcano.
