Hi Brian - AVO will be doing work out at Augustine this summer, most likely moving fuel June 9012, and geology and geophysics fieldwork July 8-14. AVO has two structures on Augustine - these are on State land and maintained by State and USGS efforts. The small green hut isn't locked, and someone could sleep in it if they needed to, however, we do not advertise or recommend this. The green hut is not very desirable for sleeping, except in an emergency. The shed that AVO maintains on Augustine is locked, and contains equipment AVO needs. Regarding hazards on Augustine: --volcanic eruption (if you leave a way for AVO to contact you, and the dates that you are on island, we would attempt to contact you in the event of significant unrest or eruption) --rockfall - the summit dome and slopes of Augustine are unstable --fumaroles near the summit: CO2 and SO2 can collect and present a breathing hazard, especially in depressions. I've never seen or heard of a bear on Augustine. There are foxes. Good luck with your trip, Cheryl Cameron -------- Brian Brettschneider wrote: I mentioned to a friend of mine that I would like to visit/explore Augustine Island sometime this summer. He contacted a friend of his, Steve Delehanty, who recommended reaching out to AVO regarding a cabin/hut out by the lagoon. The question I have for you guys is if it would be alright to use the AVO facility as shelter while visiting the Island assuming AVO is not out there doing fieldwork. Is that something that AVO would be alright with? If not, I will bring a tent. Also, am curious about bears and other safety hazards on the island.
