Hi Judith- Thank you for sending your observations to us. Sanford is a volcano, but the white plume often seen in the springtime is not volcanic. These clouds are a weather phenomenon and not related to volcanic activity. The most likely explanation for generation of these clouds is the rise and cooling of moist air as regional air masses pass over the mountains. Local geographic features and solar radiation on the peaks contributes to the presence of moist air that subsequently condenses to create and feed these clouds. You can see photos of Sanford's clouds at this link, but we are always happy to add to the image database of Sanford, if you have a new one. https://www.avo.alaska.edu/images/image_search_results.php?volcano=ak242&year%5B%5D=&type=&caption=&lastname=&firstname=&recent=&limit=50 Thank you, cheryl -------- Judith Murphy wrote: Mt Sanford has definite steam/cloud coming from near the very top.
