Hello Sammie - Sadly, AVO does not have a formal internship program. HVO has a great volunteer program: https://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/volunteer/ And for students, we highly recommend the International Volcanology Field School program: https://www.uaf.edu/geology/academics/international-volcanology/ Best wishes on your studies, Cheryl Cameron -------- Samantha McCorry wrote: To whom it may concern, Please excuse my direct approach, I am contacting you to ask if you may be able to offer me work experience during this summer or may be able to forward this email on to someone who might. I can forward my CV to assist with my application to research with the Alaska Volcano Observatory should you need it. I am a passionate and highly enthusiastic 2nd year BSc Geography and Natural Hazards undergraduate with in depth knowledge in; GIS software (ArcGIS); Environmental & Meteorological Processes; Sustainability; Numerical, Spatial and Fieldwork Skills; and Project Management. In addition to my academic abilities, I possess work experience as a research scientist, a University Student Ambassador, and in customer services, and have developed skills in; ICT; data collection and management; working within a team and alone; communication & problem-solving. I am interested in working in Alaska primarily because of my commitment to developing my knowledge, skills & experience towards completing a PhD in volcanism and establishing a career observing volcanoes as a leading volcanologist. I would like to study the properties of volcanoes, lava, rock, ashes and gases and be able to predict volcanic eruptions accurately to gain a better understanding of the processes behind volcanic activity and the impact that former and future eruptions had, and will have in shaping the climate. In addition to this, as part of my final year project, I am investigating stratovolcanoes at subduction boundaries and how the magma is distributed between these and if it could ever reach a point of equilibrium. This programme will give me the opportunity to broaden my horizons academically – whether this is working on a particular or multiple projects. I would wish to work bridging my second and final year, and I’m available from mid-June 2017 through to Mid-September 2017. Thank you for your kind consideration, I look forward to communicating with you soon. Yours Sincerely, Sammie McCorry -- Cheryl Cameron Geologist, Alaska Volcano Observatory Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys voice: 907-451-5012 fax: 907-451-5050
