Re: Unnamed volcano
Good morning, That's a fine idea. We are not the official naming organization, however. Naming of features is done through the US Board on Geographic Names and there is more information on that process here: https://www.usgs.gov/core-science-systems/ngp/board-on-geographic-names/how-... which includes a link to the naming proposal form. In the past while working with new features, we have made it a point not just to use a local language to name it, but also involved local community members and speakers as well. Thank you, AVO In my youtube series, I have been slowly covering all of the active volcanoes in Alaska. One volcano which made the list is an unnamed lava dome located at 57.87N, 155.42W. It is listed in the USGS and Smithsonian database as (potentially) early Holocene in age. One of my viewers suggested naming this volcano "Qikurngasqaq" which in the native Alutiq language translates to "gray one". Considering the feature is a presumable andesitic lava dome, this sounds like a great name to me.
