Re: Info on your facility and volcanoes
Hello Zach - Here is information on AVO: https://www.avo.alaska.edu/about/index.php . We're a three-agency organization, including the USGS, the State of Alaska, and the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute. Right now, I don't know of any open positions. We do occasionally hire staff, usually people with PhD's or at least a MS in some aspect of applied volcanology. This article is dated, but the coursework advice on how to become a volcanologist remains very true: http://volcano.oregonstate.edu/oldroot/volcanologist/how_to.html We have limited webcams because they have high battery and telemetry requirements, and the volcanoes are very remote. Best wishes on your studies, Cheryl Cameron -------- Zach Palmer wrote: Hi there, I'm Zachary Palmer. I am a senior at Lebanon High School here in Lebanon,Oregon. I am very intrigued with Alaska's Volcanism. When i go to college next fall i want to study Geology and Film Studies, so i can make documentaries of the worlds volcanoes. That includes Alaska's volcanoes. So i was wondering what can you tell me about your facility, what jobs are available, and why there are not any webcams at the other volcanoes then the one's listed. I know a lot about volcanoes and mountains like their heights, when they last erupted, and what their threat level is to nearby communities. Best Regards, Zachary Palmer, a geologist in training. :) -- Cheryl Cameron Geologist, Alaska Volcano Observatory Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys voice: 907-451-5012 fax: 907-451-5050
