Re: Bogoslof Ashfall Monitoring
Hello Mr. Good - Thank you for the report of no ashfall between 8 am and 1 pm, 31 Jan 2017 AKST! Your "volcanic ash monitoring station" sounds great. If you keep it going, we would be very interested in continued reports of ash/no ash. We also have some formal instructions on collecting ash samples here: http://www.avo.alaska.edu/ashfall.php You can also submit positive (and negative! Reports of "no ashfall" when models predicted ashfall are also very helpful to us) reports of ashfall to our "Is Ash Falling" webform. Here is the link: https://www.avo.alaska.edu/ashfall/ashreport.php You may have already explored this, but ashfall preparation information is at this link: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanic_ash/ I have cc'd Kristi Wallace, who works for AVO and runs the Alaska Tephra Lab. She may try to reach out to you with future ash and ash collection questions, if that is okay with you. Thank you again, Cheryl Cameron -------- Josh Good wrote: Hello AVO! I am a 5th grade teacher in Unalaska, and my class and I have been closely monitoring the Bogoslof happenings since mid-December. We often spend at least a short part of our mornings with a Bogoslof Update. For the 1/24 eruption we created a "Volcanic Ash Monitoring Station" (printer paper taped to a milk crate), and placed it in the playground. We found no ash to have fallen. Today, noticing the overnight ashfall, we re-instituted our Volcanic Ash Monitoring Station as soon as we were in school, and have found no ash to have fallen (we've been lucky with unusually calm weather). So from 8:00AKST to 13:00AKST, there has been no ashfall noticed by our 5th grade class (we investigated our entire sheet via microscope.) Thanks for all the great info, and the graphics showing change over time, we especially like those.
