Hello Lisa - Please check in with AVO before you climb - you can call our office at 907 786 7497, and subscribe to our Volcano Notification Service: http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vns/ When it is close to your trip, let us know the dates you'll be on-island, and a way to contact you in case of emergency. Regarding safety - the usual climbing precautions apply, with extra warnings to be careful of falling rocks, or unstable rocks, especially the summit lava dome. Also stay out of active fumarole areas. Hope you have a great trip! thanks, Cheryl Cameron -------- Lisa Gray wrote: In June my husband and I plan on being dropped off on Augustine Island. We plan to hike up Mt. Augustine. Do you have any advise? Is it safe to hike to the top? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you. -- Cheryl Cameron Geologist, Alaska Volcano Observatory Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys voice: 907-451-5012 fax: 907-451-5050
