Hello Aaron - Mount Martin does have very active fumaroles, which do produce gasses that could be harmful, particularly if they collected in depressions (where you might find yourself with no oxygen to breathe). So I would stay out of depressions, and away from fumaroles. However, I can't really advise you on the safety of climbing Martin as I've never done it. Someone who might be able to offer more advice is Kristi Wallace, who I've cc'd on this email. If there is a way to contact you while you are in Katmai, and you reply with that information and the dates of your trip, we will attempt to notify you should any volcanic hazards arise. And, of course, if you want to share your photos with us when you return, we would love to see them. Thank you, Cheryl Cameron -------- Aaron Fetter wrote: Hi, First of all - fantastic site! What a resource! Thank you for all of your hard work and research. I am looking at climbing a few different peaks in Katmai this summer, and had a question about Martin. It appears to be emitting gasses regularly, and I was wondering about the toxicity. Is it safe, from a gaseous standpoint, to climb Martin? Any information would be much appreciated! -- Cheryl Cameron Geologist, Alaska Volcano Observatory Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys voice: 907-451-5012 fax: 907-451-5050
