Hello Alaska Volcano Observatory,

My name is Leandra Marshall. I have a Bachelors in Geology from the University of Arizona, and a Masters in Geology and Geologic Hazards (specializing in Volcanology) from the University of Buffalo. I am interested in any remote volcanology volunteer opportunities you may have at your observatory.  I most recently volunteered for Hawaii Volcano Observatory remotely for about 9 months with the geologist Mike Zoeller. Now I am seeking to gain experience working with explosive volcanoes.  I was wondering if there might be anything I could assist Alaska Volcano Observatory with this time? I am planning to apply to PhD programs next year, and I am trying to buff my resume since I have been out of school for six years and primarily only working in hydrology and environmental science. Volcanology volunteer work has proved very valuable to me! Whenever possible, I travel to see volcanoes. As of last year, I have visited 53 active volcanoes! I would prefer to keep my volcanology skills and knowledge from stagnating, so I would love to be useful to other professionals in the field without any need for compensation.

Here is a summary of my experience:

I have been working on various GIS mapping projects for the past thirteen years, beginning with my volunteer work at the Tucson U.S. Geological Survey and continuing through my current position at the Arizona Department of Water Resources. Most recently I assisted Hawaii Volcano Observatory with building DEMs and 3D models of the Mauna Loa summit caldera from topographic maps in GIS to determine eruption volumes, delineating lava lake levels in Halema'uma'u Crater in GIS for lava volume calculations, mapping tephra deposits in GIS to determine ash dispersal and tephra volume calculations, and updating road layers in GIS for evacuation maps. I was also a Post-Graduate Intern and Project Coordinator at the Arizona Geological Survey with Dr. Michael Conway from November 2015 to May 2016, where I managed metadata tables and databases, updated geologic resources and photo archives, and created geoscience outreach materials.  I am very passionate about geosciences outreach and promotion. I have worked as a Geology Educator/Ranger for Craters of the Moon Volcanic National Monument, created various science/geosciences presentations for students in schools around Tucson, and have volunteered my time at Tucson Gem and Mineral Show geoscience outreach booths for the University of Arizona, U.S. Geological Survey, and Arizona Geological Survey. In terms of additional volcanology experience, I also attended the Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes Volcano Field Monitoring course in Hawaii, and I have had an internship with Oregon State University researching future eruptive behavior and volcanic hazards at El Misti volcano based on analysis of Crystal Size Distributions and Electron Microprobe compositional analyses.
