Re: Lower Klawasi Mud volcano
Hi David - As far as I know, there's no easy way to reach lower Klawasi in the summer without a helicopter. You would need to cross the Copper River, which can be difficult. Regarding the ground conditions, I have not traversed that area on foot very much, but I have cc'd Game McGimsey on this email who may be able to offer some advice. The area near the mud volcanoes is thick spruce and quite buggy. I think this area is on land owned by the Ahtna Corporation - they require permits. https://www.ahtna-inc.com/lands/land-permits/ Also, due to CO2 emissions, please choose your tent site carefully. If you do go, we would love to see any photos you take. Thank you, Cheryl Cameron -------- David Wonderlich wrote: I am looking for information about how to get to the lower klawasi mud volcano. The nps rangers and local guides have no information. The only reports from visitors I can find are on this website. I want to approach without the use of aircraft and was wondering if this has been done in the summer and about conditions on the ground on that side of the copper river. -- Cheryl Cameron Geologist, Alaska Volcano Observatory Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys voice: 907-451-5012 fax: 907-451-5050
