Re: Iliamna observations and monitoring
Good afternoon, Ms. Harris, Thank you for letting is know that you have seen vent activity lately at Iliamna. Others have reported seeing the fumaroles steaming lately as well. Because it is in Cook Inlet, Iliamna Volcano is well monitored in many ways, not only by folks who can see it directly, but also via seismometers measuring earthquakes, satellite images recording visual, heat signatures, and some gas emissions, lightning detections, and infrasound monitors. At this time, AVO does not see activity at Iliamna above the background level, which is why its current Color Code is Green, and Alert Level is Normal. The background level of activity for Iliamna does include some steaming. You can get updates anytime on our website, which you seem to have already visited (https://www.avo.alaska.edu/volcanoes/volcinfo.php?volcname=Iliamna), and alerts are sent out on our Twitter and facebook accounts, or you can sign up for text alerts at: http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vns/ Thank you. Hello, As someone who lives viewing Iliamna daily, I have noticed an increase in vent activity in the last few months. I also noticed that there are no reports or observations for iliamna dated from 2020. This is concerning. Please let me know if this volcano is being monitored and who I can get updates from. Regards Janel Harris
