Hi Cindy, Thanks for your report. We received a call yesterday from another resident of Chignik Lake who reported loud rumbling as well. Veniaminof volcano is about 20 miles west of Chignik Lake. You are likely hearing small explosions at the volcano that are accompanied by minor amounts of ash and steam. Along with ash and steam, there is lava flowing a short distance from the intracaldera cone, however we do not expect the lava to flow any further than a few thousand feet from the cone. Thanks again for your report, and I will pass on your note to John Power as well. -Janet -------- CINDY ANDERSON wrote: This message is for John Power...can't find you e-mail list for employees. John, this is Cindy (Kathy McDonalds sister) from Homer. I live in Chignik Lagoon during the summer. I was wondering can you tell me how far the volcano is from us. My step-daughter and I have been hearing rumblings today. We both thought it was thunder, but am thinking it is the volcano. And where would be the best link to information on preparedness in case of a major eruption. It has been awhile since the last one I went through. Thanks in advance, Cindy anderson
